Tackling Climate Change:

Two thirds of the energy created is lost as waste heat.

Need for Renewable Energy

The Soret effect is the resulting phenomenon in which an temperature gradient induces a concentration gradient in multicomponent mixtures. The Soret coefficient is the ratio of thermally driven diffusion to mutual diffusion driven by concentration gradients. It is measured at steady state when, the two forces are balanced.

Understanding the Soret effect and establishing a model for solid polymer electrolytes, would be instrumental in the development of optimal thermogalvanic cells.  Thermogalvanic cells, are closed electrochemical systems, where electricity is formed from thermal, as opposed to chemical potential, gradients. Thermogalvanic cells are an ideal substitute for low grade waste heat recovery, using an induced gradient to increase efficiency, instead of removing excess heat which has been previously thought to degrade the battery.
